    Running very sloooowwwww.

Hey guys I am out of ideas on what to do to try and solve this problem, so any suggestions you have would be awesome.

I'm running Fedora 6 right now on a really old machine.

    pentium III ~930 mhz
    ~390 meg ram

So I don't expect the most amazing results, but right now everything is running really slow. And I can't figure out why.

When I run Top and look at how system resources are being used the cpu is never pushed to the limit. It is always at least 50% idle.

In terms of memory there is always at least 100 meg free and the swap space is not used at all, so I don't think thrashing is going on but I am not sure.

I'm really at a loss for even where to look right now. The system is running slow, and the available resources are not being used. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for where the bottleneck might be and ways to go about finding/confirming what is going on with my system.

    Thanks a lot

    Michael

Though Fedora Core 6 is more a full featured distro then a fast one, it should probably run a little faster. You should try disabling SELinux (in /etc/selinux/config) and system services you don't need.

You can find a lot of good info here :

For even more speed, I suggust that you try out a lighter desktop environment such as xfce. You don't have to, but just my .02

It could also be that it's not actually running slowly, just that the graphics are slow to update, making it feel slow. Make sure you've got the manufacturer-produced drivers if you have an nvidia or ati video card.

You must have something hogging resources if it is 50% idle that means something is consuming 50% of the cpu. Open a terminal and enter:
    Code:
    $ top
    and see what is running.

I have FC6 installed on a P3 550MHz with a Nvidia card and Gnome when enabling destop effects it doesn't use 50% cpu.

Mine is 1gb ram... with nvidia videocard. And gui's take more than a minute to launch in FC6.
    FC5 was running completely fine.
$ top tells me just 0.1% cpu memory is being used... any suggestions?

I'd like to add to this question. I allocated 2GB to SWAP space. (Ok maybe a bit much I know). But I've NEVER seen it being used. But it uses 700MB + of my 1.5GB ram. It's like this with whichever distro I use. At the moment I use PCLinuxOS.

I found out the solution. It worked fine whenever I was online.
I deactivated the ethernet card when I'm offline and the applications launch properly now.
