lan config - where to start

ok never used linux before and have installed redhat 9 to run an asterisk pbx.

Have only installed the shell interface as advised to do so for asterisk but am having problems with the lan setup

the lan card was installed before installation but the config wizard did not come up in the intalation process.

Is this because the system could not identify the lan card?

Do i get a new lan card or is there something i can do to manualy setup in shell

i have tried ifconfig comands to set an ip but get permission denied.

Is there a good basic guide on linux shell iu can read?

You should be able to configure the networking with:

    Code:
    redhat-config-network
but you need to run this as root. If I recall correctly, this will work from either X or from a text/console login. Redhat 9 is a very old distribution though, you may have trouble getting it to work on newer hardware - and that could include your network card. You could try upgrading the OS to CentOS, which is based on RedHat Enterprise Linux - the latest server OS from RedHat, only you dont have to pay for it with CentOS (you get no official support, either...) and it might resolve any hardware problems you have. The other alternative is to buy a cheapo RTL8139-based network card, which should work straight out of the box, even on RH9.

You could also go check out trixbox.org for a ready made ISo of Asterisk with CentOS. it also laods a ton of other helpful add-ons for Asterisk as well. I have used it on several boxes and always seems to find hardware without a hitch. ;o)
