Problems with Installing Linux
I am having problems installing Linux. My former favorite PC is a 500mhz P-3 which was recently formatted. I was given a copy of Ubuntu Linux 6.0.6 to install on it for squirts and squats. This is a good time to say that I know absolutely nothing about Linux but am very interested and eager to learn a few things. The CD runs upon start up and I choose INSTALLATION. After a few minutes of what appears to be installations logs, I am left with a black screen which reads "U compressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel" If you feel at any time that I am a moron and completely over my head, just say so. Otherwise, any advice, tips or tricks are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If that's as far as it gets, then you've probably got either a badly burned disk or a dodgy CD-ROM on the computer. You can download a new copy of your favourite distro by going to www.distrowatch.com, then burn the .iso image on to a new blank CD.
You could also try swapping out the CD player in the computer, but that seems a bit drastic at this stage.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

Try Puppy Linux for older PC
Try running a Puppy Live CD to see how it works on your machine. It is small and versatile and looks pretty good. It can also boot off a USB drive if your computer has that option. The hard part for a beginner is getting the downlaod image correctly copied onto the CD. It has to be burned as an image (iso file) and not copied.

That's good to know man. I have a P3 at home and no is using it so far. I will try the Puppy Live CD on it. Kids will love to use that PC for their purpose.
