anomie advice is excellent, but just so you don't get lost in there.
Debian Quick Reference is a good starter and a must read :

In general, learn how to use Debian package management : APT (apt-get, dpkg, synaptic, aptitude).
If you want to have a pleasant system, having a good /etc/apt/sources.list is a must. Something like that would be a good start :
