I can't seem to get | key to work

    Hey guys

Have got up to 'pipe' in my tutorials, but i can't access the "|" key on my keyboard.

I noticed that some keys were in different spots (EG #), but i have tried all my keys with and without shift and i have had no success.

How can i get this "|" without the key?

What would i press, type, hold, combine, etc?

What keyboard layout do you normally use - and what do you get when you hit shift with the key above tab?

i was using a Star Key window multimedia keyboard, now a HP similar keyboard.

Its a US setup i think. I am in Australia.

pressing it normally, i get : #, if i hold shift and press it i get ~.

Pressing Shift 3 gives me the british pound sterling symbol.
