in simple terms
SCSI or SATA drives use a serial bus to send data to the CPU.
PATA drives use a parallel bus to send data.
The hard drives which are available on market today are all IDE drives as the electronics required for controlling the drive are located on the drive itself. (this is true since the late 80's). It is a common misconception among people to call the older Parallel ATA based drives IDE when all drives are actually IDE (or EIDE if you want to be pedantic).
Main difference between SCSI/SATA/PATA is the speed of data transfer, with SCSI being the fastest and PATA being the slowest.Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.
