    The Kernel & the Captain

Back in the days when DOS was the kernel for windows I could see when addiong commands to "update the basics" and then the shell had to be changed for the commands but for some reason this linux stuff has me buffed...

Google for different things like this this

Which immediately launches into how to patch the kernel...So this turns into an afternoon job esp for a newbie

I been trying to get wireless to work on about every distro there is and doing this

I havnt got it to work yet......

So it might help this old newbie and others just to give a brief explanation in simple terms what they are actually doing here in simple terms.. I have learned alot but remember we are still on the windows page and ion the south forty...

I have a laptop with wireless and online with it and downloading what I need (or wat I think I need ) for the linux box which is an adventure in itself....

One serious question How come I can download a deb and cd to the folder where I put it and it flat cant be found by apt-get ( apt-get gpothcha error--- could not find pgothca __2.3 -xyz_all .deb)but I use dpkg and full name it it sees it? Could I add it to the source list and install with synaptic?

IO stopped in to get gas and when she asked wat was goin on I said my apt-get isnt findin wat its sposed to be gettin... She laughed wat the hell u doin now?

Some advise to those that are developing linux I am an old farmer that knows what real cream is When you stir the milk the cream doesnt rise to the top Give a kernel a break and develop a shell around it to talk to different softwares Get it STABLE STABLE for everybody to use then build another foundation but right now it is a constant whirlwind and so complicated everybody has a hard time crossing over... Develop the shell for the kernel and maybe some software manus can adapt...

Hmmm, you seem to be struggling with the 'Linux is not Windows' phenomenon. You'll be arguing next that your 'start' button is in the wrong place

I hate to disagree with new members, but the reason that the kernel and the command line parameters work that way is normally because they've had years of exposure to life at the Unix command shell. There has been plenty of time to find an efficient way of doing things, but is different to Windows. The DOS shell is a poor copy of the Unix command line.

In my experience linux is already more stable than windows. I dont have to reboot Linux every week like I have to my Windows PC at work. In fact, I never turn it off at all (unless I change hardware, like that new HDD I put in last week).

May I suggest that, if you're struggling with the culture shock of Linux that isn't windows, you may want to give 'Linspire' or 'Freespire' a go, they attempt to be much more familiar to former Windows users.

On another issue, if you need help with your wireless connection, then please tell us what distribution you're using and tell us what wireless chipset you have (if you dont know, then post the output of 'lspci', it'll be in there somewhere).

Thats funny...I didnt expect it to be under the clutch pedal (different story)

That post was out of frustration.. Im not comfy enough to put linux on the laptop yet so I boot with a live cd. Last one was pclinuxos

The chipset is BCM 4318 and the dricer is BCMWL5.. I dpenloaded the latest ndiswapper and finally figured out the dependency tree and downloded all od the dependents and got the point where it needed lbc6 2.41 and the lbc6 2.3 wouldnt work I googled and googled and couldnt find 2.41 I did find 2.5 and it messed it up..
I do have a cat5 cross cable between the linux box and the laptop which has internet access with a friends wifi.. I have a fat32 partion to share with windows and can actually download directly to the linux hd but eventually the goal is to access the internet via cable and use the laptop as a host...The linux os will be a system that I dont want to directly hook up to the net and once I get it working for what I need I wont be updating it on a regular basis..
You speak of having to reboot windows Try running a karaoke show and recording every singer into a wav file.. After so many it bogs down to a slow crawl That is why Im struggling with linux at my old age... I know it wont bog down... The servers that run on windows have to be shut down every now and then to clear out the temps
Anyway dont take my posts verbatim or too seriously
