    Hard Drives

i currently am running windows on my pc. i have 3 HD - a 40gb IDE a 200gb and a 300gb HD both sata - does linux support sata hard drives? if so how do i get my HD recognized by my linux os? I'm using both Mepis and Ubuntu (i'm new and testing both out).

i have a 300gb HD with one partition on it. i divided it up leaving 260gb for win and only 40gb for linux. should i have partitioned it b4 i tried to install linux? i ask that bc i tried to use qtpart but it didnt recognize my sata HD.

    hi WindowsAfterBirth !

    Welcome to the Forums !!!

if Qtparted is not recognizing SATA harddisk it means your chipset is not supported by Linux kernel. there are a few workarounds listed here but those are a bit complicated for newbies.
why dont you install Linux in 40GB IDE?

is anyother OS installed in IDE HD? how many Partitions? you can't create more than four Primary Partitions. download GParted LiveCD. its one of the best Partition Manager. boot from it and resize partitions.

when i boot from the gparted disc, can i format and partition a hard drive?

will it help linux to recognize my sata hd?

i already have windows installed on my 40gb ide hd, will that effect my ability to resize or partition the hd?

delete the rest of space, dont format/partition it. Linux installer will partition and format the 'unpartitioned/free' space.
