Newb trying to get dialup nameservers to work
I have debian running on my toshiba laptop and I connect to the dialup through a XIRCOM realport combo PCMCIA card. Looking at the syslog I can see that the modem is recognised and the dialup connection is made. There is a line "Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS3" which I guess is to make the ppp0 work on the PCMCIA card. Anyway I get connected and I am able to ping and ssh IP numbers but not names. I see the DNS servers IP's in syslog, and /etc/ppp/peers/myisp has "usepeerdns" as it's last line, but it doesn't seem to be happening. I can force DNS resolution by making entries in /etc/hosts and they work. I used pppconfig to sest it up, and pon/poff to make the connection, all seemingly ok except for the DNS issue. I have ALL: ALL in /etc/hosts.deny and ALL: LOCAL in /etc/hosts.allow, but I've tried making it ALL: ALL in /etc/hosts.allow with no change to the problem. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
