Which linux good for mathematician?
I am a student of mathematics; I am fond of Indian Pure classical music. My needs are:
C++, VC, Vbasic, and some like compilers;
LaTeX environment;
very fast Internet connection and a download manager;
an mp3 player with good equalizer.
Dear friends, I have been presently using ubuntu and the internet connection is far slower than in windows. While in windows my download speed is 200kbps, in ubuntu it is maximum 70kbps.
Second, mp3 players in ubuntu don't have equalizer.
The installation of LaTeX environment demanded a heavy download, and thus much time.
Compilers are not present.
So all I have to do is to rely upon windows.
Friends, experts, can you help me with advice?
Thanks and regards,
Saurav

* For Visual C and VB just stick to the usual Visual Studio in Windows. But if you are developing for Linux, then use gcc/g++ for C/C++ compilation and something like KDevelop or Ecclipse as the IDE.
* Internet connection, hmm try using a static IP or disabling ipv6 to get some speed back. Download manager, use wget or the download manager which comes with Firefox.
* Media Player: Amarok or XMMS both come with equalizers
* LaTex, hmm well I guess wait for download to finish or download from a friend's computer which has faster internet.
* Basic Ubuntu install doesn't install compilers....
From this, I would recommend you get hold of a openSUSE 10.2 or Fedora Core 6 as both have all of the above software included on the dvd, so no extra downloading is required.
Hope this helps.
