    Unhappy File Recovery Programs?

i've been searching for a while today but it seems anything i find is a demo or i have to pay for it. Does anyone know of some good file recovery programs that will work with ext2 partitions? i lost a whole year and a half of JPG files. i am devistated.

If it runs in Windows XP or Linux i'll be happy as long as i can get my files back with it. i am currently running Kubuntu (Debian based) and Windows XP.

Sorry i completely forgot to post that.

My partition tables got screwed up twice. Installing Gentoo, failing to i should say. Then reinstalling Kubuntu then windows. Windows screwed up my whole hard drive and i had to repartition everything.

    you can try www.partedmagic.com

on it, there is a program called testdisk. One types testdisk /dev/hdx or sdx whatever device you want to work on. Then proceed through the prompts and it will help you recover your lost partitions. Sometimes, after deleting a partition, the data still remains on the device, and can (sometimes) be recovered.

i'll give it a try. i'm using a crappy program right now in Windows called Disk Internals Linux Recovery. It's a demo and it's very slow. It seems to have found data from my ext2 partition.

i've decided to use my old desktop as a file server from now on. This is just too dangerous. i'm going to try that program you suggested. Thank you so much for replying.

TestDisk/photoRec is the best for getting Jpeg's and other files back in windows and linux.
Download it here it's only 1.4 meg and pretty easy to use.

testdisk looks helpful. i've installed the stuff from this link: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec and it's running now. The other program i was using is junk it just listed the files and i couldn't do anything with them... well i could but it didn't work.
