Why should i switch to linux / Ubuntu ?
hi guys...
i have a question...
i have windows XP on my laptop...
and now i just want to know, wats the big difference between ubuntu & XP ?
will all the programs like yahoo, msn, skype, photoshop, visual studio etc work on ubuntu ?
basically will i be able to run everything that i run on XP on ubuntu ?
or is it that that people use Linux rather than XP just to look cool 'n different from others who uses XP ?

I ve seen somewhere where was written. MS and Linux are like car and motorbike.
You can run many applications on windows and many of them on Linux. I personaly prefer Linux.
I think we cannot compare windows and Linux specialy you cant ask what will work.
I use gaim for yahoo and msn, affcourse skype works, but Im not sure about photoshop (I never used it)...
You can have dual boot If you want...

Welcome to the forums!

Take a look at the link in my signature for lots of information about Linux vs Windows and other things new Linux users often ask about.

You will not be able to run Photoshop, but can run GIMP which is the open source photo manipulation program. You will be able to run all the instant messengers and use the same login. You will be able to run Skype plus several other VoIP programs.
But you will have to get used to no virus - no trojans - no malware and best of all no crashes or hangs.
You CAN dual boot your system and keep XP as a pacifier until you feel comfortable with Ubuntu. You can also run UBUNTU from a Live CD and not install it at all. I have Ubuntu running from a USB thumb drive - try that with XP.

512MB RAM is enough for any major distro including Ubuntu.

and can i use partition magic to create a free space ?
and where can i get the CD of ubuntu? and wat do u mean by LIVE CD of ubuntu ?
sorry ...m bugging u guys a lot but i want to learn.
- 02-03-2007 #10yes. anytime.if i multi-boot it and after a while if i dont like ubuntu and wants to delete the whole ubuntu thing....i can rite?
you have to create a free space for Ubuntu. boot up from Ubuntu LiveCD and open GParted. its in Menu. resize D: drive ( its last partition ) to 10GB and leave rest space as it is. Click in Install Icon on Desktop. this will start Ubuntu Installation. in Partition Section, select 'Unpartitioned/free Space' for install. dont forget this step else Ubuntu will ERASE Windows XP.i have XP on C:\ now should i install ubuntu on C:\ or should i use D:\ (i use D:\ for data storage)
i would suggest you to Backup your DATA defore Ubuntu Installation.
download it from here.and where can i get the CD of ubuntu?
check here !wat do u mean by LIVE CD of ubuntu ?
