    32-bit distro on 64-bit processor?

Would a 32-bit version of Linux (say Ubuntu 6.10 i386) work on a computer with a 64-bit processor (say AMD Athlon 64 X2)? The reason I ask is I want the fast processor (and AMD is cheaper than intel) but it seems a lot of software doesn't work on 64-bit Linux versions. I read the sticky about processors but still can't figure out the answer to this question. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
