    Help! GRUB has error 17!

    Help someone please!

I just installed ubuntu and was running it alongside my Windows XP home edition Toshiba 1.6GHz Celeron processor with 512MB ram and a single 80 GB hard disk.

I was getting used to swapping around the OS and had a few problems which resulted in me restarting the machine a few times.

I then got a message this morning when GRUB was loading saying 'Error 17'

I didn't know what to do. I've even tried running the liveCD again to see if i could rectify the problem throught that but even that ends up with logical error lists.

I then get a message from GRUB saying "hard disk error".

Someone please tell me that this doesn't mean my hard disk has crashed! If anyone has any idea what i can do ( and I must state that since GRUB begins to load before it produces a line with the message(s) and I can't load any OS at the moment).

    Help please! I'm desperate!

what type of logical errors? is machine booting up from LiveCD? if yes, whats the output of 'sudo fdisk -l' command? could you mount partitions manually?

    LiveCD

LiveCD doesn't boot I'm sorry to say

The lines of script just keep saying logical error 8 or 5 or any other number less than 10, and say something about hda something, which I take to mean my hard disk.

it means problem is with harddisk only but machine should boot up from LiveCD.
download UBCD or System Rescue CD. boot from it and scan/fix harddisk errors.
