What distribution of Linux do you have? Most of the LiveCDs have some sort of program you can run to install it onto your harddrive (thus removing the need to constantly boot from the CD), but they're all slightly different.

Do you already have another OS like windows installed? If so and assuming it is using the entire drive partition you will need to resize that partition.

If this is the case you will certainly want to study up on repartioning and dual booting with Windows. There are many tutorials on this subject that you can find using google.

    An example link.

Well, that does simplify things. Leave the Linux partition unformatted and the installer should give you the option to "install using free space". That simplifies the whole partitioning process by letting Linux do it for you.

You should intall windows first. I'll repeat my suggestion about researching and in this case 'dual booting' in particular.

Swap is necessary for Linux, you're going to need it . Swap is a form of virtual memory, which is memory, often as simulated on a hard disk, that emulates RAM, allowing an application to operate as though the computer has more memory than it actually does.
    That's my two pence worth.
