Couple of software equivalents (not covered by the list in FAQ's)

    Hi there,

I've looked all over the list from the link in the FAQ's giving equivalent software programs for linux and windows but couldn't find a couple that I'm looking for. I was hoping perhaps that someone might have run across something similar.

    Wordweb (dictionary)
    WeatherPulse
Adobe Pagemaker (or at least something that will read/edit .p65 files)
    Microsoft Photodraw (.mix files)
    Roboform
Syncing "outlook" info with Linux (probably Kontact or Evolution) to Pocket PC

I've searched, googled etc and couldn't find answers for the above. Found some similar programs such as Scribus for Pagemaker but it doesn't seem to actually read the .p65 files. I was hoping for suggestions that might allow that. Perhaps WINE or Crossover Office would allow me to run some of these?

I want to stress that I'm not trying to make Linux into my Window system. If I wanted that I wouldn't even consider looking to switch and going to the effort to learn a new system. However, in some of the cases, we have literally years of work in those file types that I don't want to just lose forever. I don't mind moving over to new software but it would be great to be able to keep access to those files in the meantime. Make sense?

    Thanks so much in advance!!

The *.p65 are proprietary too Pagemaker, but you could save-as or export your current files to the *.pdf format from Pagemaker and use them with a number of other Linux or Win programs.

Apparently Pagemaker works well under Wine on Linux, so you could try that till you've switched to a Linux native package which doesn't rely on proprietary file types... I think Scribus is the one to use on Linux?

For a dictionary; aspell, ispell, Kdict, myspell, and others no doubt.

For weather information you could use KWeather. It can operate as a system tray applet or can integrate with Kontact. Evolution is the GNOME counterpart to Kontact and it has a weather plug-in as well.

Some other alternatives are widgets using SuperKaramba, Opera, Jackfield, aDesklets, The Widget Factory, gDesklets, or Screenlets.

Like the .p65 files, .mix files are proprietary. I'd suggest converting them to PNG (which PhotoDraw supports) or preferably SVG. Once you do that there are a lot of good vector graphics applications for Linux. Inkscape, Karbon, Skencil, Sodipodi, Synfig Studio, and Xara LX are some of the major ones.

KeePassX looks to be an alternative to RoboForm. If you use the Opera browser, it has a built-in password manager
