    Installing Ubuntu

Alright I just got done downloading Ubuntu (its working great btw im using it right now) and well i want to install it but since i am new to Linux im not sure on installing it to my hard drive... I got my Windows XP Btw.. and its on its own part of the hard drive now i saved space for linux and well when i go to install i come up to the mounting part and its kinda messin with my mind and i need some help on setting it up right..

    here is what it says..

Select which partitions you want to use for your new installation, and where you want to mount each of them.

You must mount one partition on the root file system ("/"), and you must choose at least one partition for use as swap space.
See i have Windows XP on hdc1, and i want to get swap on hdc2, and Ubuntu on hdc5 can someone help me please..

btw when i try doing it the way i think it was should go i get

    No root file syste
so what am i doing wrong?

    Thank you

    hi smackie !

best way is leave Unpartitioned/free space and let the installer create and format partitions.
if you want to create partitions manualy, boot up from Ubuntu LiveCD, open GParted, its in Menu and format hdc2 as SWAP and hdc5 in ext3 FileSystem. during installation, select hdc2, choose SWAP in mount point box. select hdc5 and choose /.

GParted or Gnome Partition Editor are same. actual package name is GParted. in GNOME, its called Gnome Partition Editor and in KDE, its QtParted.
