    www.python.org is your best bet. It has a tutorial there that you could work you way through. Other than that, a good google search for python tutorial should do the job.

    Python comes with just about every distro I know. If not, it should be really easy to get with the package manager.

    BTW, python is interpreted not compiled.

    There is a free book called Dive Into Python that's worth reading.

    There are also a lot of Python IDE's available, although I haven't used any of them. You can find a list here.
