    Newbie Broadband Questions

Hi, I am new to linux, and have test drove xandros, and 1 or two others(forget which though) anyways I have come to find that getting a cable modem to be recognized is down right nearly impossible!! I also notice that many more people are having this problem. I am wondering if there is any distro that will automatically detect my modem(through ethernet) or if there is one suited for newbies and then help me figure out how to get my modem working possibly. heres what i'm running.

I'm also very new to Linux. I have windows users in the house so when we got DSL I spent over 9 hours getting it to work on the widows system and less than half an hour getting online using Fedora Core 5.
With the modem connected I booted the system. I use GUI's so I selected Administration, then Network from the menu. After the root password I got the 'Network Configuration' GUI. Under the Device tab I activated eth0. Then I closed 'Network Configuration' and opened Firefox. That was all it took. I hope this helps.
