Check out "Small or lightweight distributions for use with older machines" on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...older_machines
How much Hard Disk space and RAM do you have? Puppy Linux is OK

Arch Linux can be small too, if you go with the basic system and a small DE or WM, but if you don't like command line configuration, you probably won't like Arch:

thanks for the suggestions.
I have only been on his laptop once or twice and I don't remember the exact specs but I know they were TINY. I'll have to check again when I get my hands on it, but for some reason I seem to remeber like an insanely small hard drive, and I'm sure the memory is as depressing (for sure less than 5 GB and probably 128mb or less if I had to take a blind guess).
Ozar-I for sure want to stay away from the complicated command line systems as I'm completely new to this.

I think xubuntu is the cut down version of ubuntu and ubuntu is great so i'd say look into that.
quote from website " It is lighter on system requirements and tends to be more efficient than Ubuntu with GNOME or KDE, since it uses the Xfce Desktop environment, which makes it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware. My personal favourite amongst the smaller distributions is Austrumi, lightning fast and it uses the Enlightenment desktop environment...it's just super! All for 50 MB
