yet another "which linux" post

I'm looking for a dual-bootable unix distro for development in Java/C++. I've downloaded Solaris figuring if I were to do Java programming might as well get Sun's OS, but I don't even see it mentioned here as one of the forum options. Is it a bad choice for what I want to do?
I really only want to get my feet wet, get at least moderately confortable using linux from the command line, and maybe write a few apps or mess with a few that have already been made. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

If you're specifically looking for a UNIX operating system, your options are limited. Solaris is the only one I know of that works on commodity X86/X86_64 hardware and is available for free.
BSD is about the closest free thing you'll find to actual UNIX if you're not interested in Solaris.
If however you are interested in a Linux distribution (they're not the same thing) I recommend reading this thread:

Thanks, I didn't realize that solaris was Unix lol. Guess that's why I'm here at the newbie forum right?

Thanks for your help!
