    Setting Up New Hard Drive

    Hi,
Ive just finished building a new PC and plan to tri-boot with Ubuntu, Mandriva and SimplyMEPIS. What I would like to do is set up three initial partitions on the brand new HDD before installing as I once made a stuff up on my Windoze machine.
I thought of downloading GParted to create the three partitions first then each distro would have its own allocation to be installed into and set up without me having to work out ratios and all that.
    Is this a sound idea?

I suggest you just use the partitioning tools that come with each Linux distro. Learning how to partition is not a difficult task and will come in real handy when working with linux.
