    For some distros you can do ctrl-alt-delete, others you need to do ctrl-alt-F1 (or F2, etc...), log in, run ps -A and kill x (kill process_number)

    This is a great thing to read about the X server. There are more ways to kill X than you can shake a stick at!

    Control Alt Backspace has been known to kill xservers too

    What distro are you using? Some distros can restart X differently.

    Yeah Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will restart the xserver for you. (I've only used this method in KDE and I'm not sure if this works with GNOME, etc.)

    I use it on gnome all the time
