What version of Redhat are we talking about? Most versions of Linux have some form of Java installed, but it's not necessarily the official Sun Java. Projects like Fedora Core like to include the GNU GCJ runtime, which works similarly but isn't 100% compatible with Sun's version of Java.

Redhat 9 is quite old, so unless there's a good reason I'd recommend using something newer, such as Fedora Core 6 or CentOS 4. Both of those come with the latest GCJ compiler, and you can also download the proper Sun Microsystems version of Java from here:

    http://java.sun.com

The Sun version of Java should install just fine on Redhat 9, but like I said, unless you have a specific reason I'd use something newer. You're likely to run into less problems that way.
