    Question Linux Starter packs.

Hi, I'm just getting started with Linux, and due to my terrible download speeds I'm buying some things from the Linux store.

Most of it is fairly self-explanatory, but I would appreciate a little help with this one. A friend of mine recommended I start with, "The Linux Starter Pack" I had no idea what he mean't by this at first, so decided to have a look around, and found this , my question is, are these Live CD's so I don't have to install them immediately, or not? And is this a good thing to be looking at? Or should I be starting my quest in a better place?

I tryed having a look with the search for a topic of this nature, but google just brought up products, and I couldn't find anything on your forums. I'm sorry if this is a re-post, if you could kindly re-direct me to the topic I'm missing, again I'd be appreciative.

    Thanks,
    æhacsæ

Best is to ask thelinuxshop.co.uk, because they are the ones offering it. I know Ubuntu has CD that is both life and install...

Nice package that is. I have heard good things about Suse and PCLinux and I know Ubuntu is nice too, especially if you're just starting out with Linux. It has very helpful forums too.

Like Daan said, Ubuntu is a live CD. I've never used any of the other distros mentioned.

Well, looking at the site you provided, here is what I can tell you:

SuSE 10.2 is not a LiveCD; it requires install.
Mandriva One, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu and SimplyMepis are all LiveCDs.
Xandros OCE I have no idea, but regular Xandros is not a LiveCD.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you all for your time,

I have sent an e-mail to thelinuxshop.co.uk asking them, but I thought I'd ask here too.

The "Pocket Linux Manual" that comes with the package I linked, is this worth going to the extra trouble to have? I am a beginner, but I have been looking around the internet for tutorials, etc and found a wealth of information, so maybe it isn't so important I have the pocket book?

If it's not that important I get the pocket maybe I should just buy the package. Ideally I would get "The Ultimate Linux Package" as it seems more "complete", but I'll see what they get back to me with.

/* thank you techieMoe, that's cleared that up */

    Thanks again,
    æhacsæ

Is it definitely "The Linux Starter Pack". Could it not be "Linux Starter Kit" (a paperback and CD available from Amazon) based on Suse 10.1 see http://www.amazon.com/Linux-Starter-...e=UTF8&s=books

Ubuntu will send you a free CD by post. See "Requesting free CDs from ShipIt" at https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ - Kubuntu (related) will do the same. See "Requesting free CDs from ShipIt" at https://shipit.kubuntu.org/

    Other Distro's

Perhaps you could use Bit Comet and download an image file of knoppix live. It has loads of software in it and is really easy to learn.

If you have a slow internet connection then the more software and information you get the better. However, if you can't find a distro you like in the starter pack all I can say is... Remember, it's Linux, so everything is customizable.

nubyguy; Unfortunately I am on Dial-up, no ISP's can supply cable internet for me, so downloading ISO images for the CD's is not an option for me.

arochester; Thanks for the links, just to clarify what I mentioned earlier, I am referring to "The Linux Starter Pack" from this source, it wasn't a book I meant, but that "package" of discs. Thank you for the amazon link, I may well end up taking that route, I seem to learn things a little more thoroughly from a book than of the internet... And again, thanks for the other link, I'll look at those to when I'm not busy.

Dark_Stang; Do you not have to know a fair bit about C programming to actually "customize" Linux? Forgive me, I am new, but a fairly reliable source told me that.

    Thanks again,
    æhacsæ

Actually I only have a year's experience with C/C++. But uh... I didn't mean that deep of customization. I was thinking more along the lines of: You choose what desktop enviroment you want. You choose the package manager. You choose your repositories. You choose your file browser.
