    automatic linux partitions

I want to load peanut or puppy on a old P1 and want to know if theres a program that will do automatic linux partitions to get the hard drive ready for linux. I tried to use the automatic partition thats in ubuntu but it took too long even to get to that step and my pc just stopped responding. I figured after it did the partitions I'd remove the CD befor it started to load ubuntu and then load peanut (will that work?). So I'm looking for the program the distros use for auto partitions, its all open source right? so it should be avalibul I hope.

Give the Gparted Live CD a shot. It runs in Fluxbox so you don't have to worry about using up system resources since you're running a slower computer. i've heard this live CD works wonders.

All partitioning tolls require some amount of intervention by the user. When ever you have other OS's or Linux distro's installed the partitioning tool will need to know what you want to do so a basic understanding of how to partition really is important and not all that hard to learn with a bit of work.

Any 'light weight' distro that you choose should do the job. Check the disto's requirements like minimum RAM, etc. and then give a shot.

I figured after it did the partitions I'd remove the CD befor it started to load ubuntu and then load peanut (will that work?)
If I understand you correctly, to remove Ubuntu use your partitioning tool that is included with the distro you decide on to delete the Ubuntu partition. This will be part of the new disto's installation so you won't need to anything else other than install it.
