If you just updated for the first time there will be a ton of things to update.

And when you are talking about Desktop effects are you talking about Beryl/Compiz

Which graphics card are you using - with nvidia, you'll get the effects wokring, but if you're using a relatively new ati card, then you can forget about the desktop effects.

Once you get your Graphics Card working you'll see a HUGE difference.

Not really, use the fglrx driver and Xgl and everything works just fine but you will need to configure it manually

Juan Pablo, is there any good tutorial that goes through how to install XGL properly with ATI?

I haven't installed in Fedora but it works just fine on Gentoo and Ubuntu, it should be the same steps as any other distro after you get direct rendering and install Xgl (is it on Fedora's repos?)
Then you can either use Compiz (I think) bundled with Fedora or get Beryl's rpms or compile from source

Well, trouble is... there is no direct rendering, and openGL is not by ati, but from mesa. It all should be the other way round, but I couldn't find anywhere where it tells you how to make direct rendering "yes". From all the instructions that i've read about installing ati drivers, if dr is not yes, then you're on your own. I'm using fxlrx drivers v. 8.*.34 and ATI Radeon X1650 Pro. I'm not too sure if the XGL is in the repos.
