    Internet

    Hey everyone,

Me and my boyfriend just installed Linux on our other computer, and unlike windows, the internet drivers do not automatically install. How does Linux install drivers and whatever else is needed for connection to the internet via broadband?

    re: question

I am also a new linux user, i had a similar problem and was advised to install the latest version of the distro i was running(fedora 3 at the time). I finally ordered for Ubuntu the latest version and all the network cards (wireless and wired) are working now.

Actually I think you'll find that Linux installs more drivers by default than MS Windows, and very rarely do you need to install separate drivers for your discrete components such as your network card. Are you simply unable to connect to the internet? As tomeriker asked, it would be helpful if you could tell us what distribution you're using.

We are running Ubuntu 6.10. This is the boyfriend, I got ubuntu installed and everything is working fine and I love it. I am now trying to get the internet to work. I have it working on my XP machine via a Scientific Atlanta Webstar. I usually run the modem with a USB into the XP machine but I have read on the wiki that it is much easier to do it with ethernet. So all of the lights on the ethernet card are blinking normally and all but one is on the cable modem; send.
I am new to the area so I am not sure as to how Optimum Online installs their modems since I was not home when the tech came. I know some settings had to be made when I had Comcast, so I am thinking Optimum may be this way also? Is this what I need to fix or would this not be the problem? I would like to figure this out on my own since my girlfriend said that the tech who came to install it could barely spell; I don't want to have to deal with paying money to have a guy come out just to ask me, "Ubuntu? that's not Windows...." I am hoping it is a different problem. Thanks to anyone who can help!
