    Partitioning a hard drive

I'm a pretty noobish computer user. I use a not-yet year old laptop with windows xp. I'm pretty satisfied by windows, but I want to play around with computers and the OS. I wanted to know how I would go about partitioning my hard drive to install some version of linux(I've looked into ubuntu and I like it). I will back up all my files and everything, but is there any chance that I'll lose any data or corrupt windows or have to wipe everything clean?

    Hi niner49,

    Welcome to the LinuxForums.

Ubuntu LiveCD has one of the best Partition Manager, GParted. resize Windows partitions and leave 8-10GB free/unpartitioned space for Ubuntu. during installation, select 'free space for install' in partition section. installer will create/format partition in free space. dual boot is default. installer will recognize Windows and setup dual boot for you.

    Good Luck !

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Hello,
I just saw how you describe the partition. I have a friend here in France who told me that I have to partition de Hard Drive in 3 parts. One for XP, one for OS Linux and one for Home part or something like this. I wanted to know if this was correct or not? Also he told me about a partition to save work or files so it can be read from Linux and XP at the same time depending which OS I am using???? I am new to Linux and I like it.
I wanted to install Linux Mint but he told me that I should insall Ubuntu first as this is better for new users?

    What do you think?

    Emmanuel
