    Hi-newbie, trying to check out ifLinux RAM reqs have erupted over the last 3 yrs?y

    Considering trying Linux - and I thought a 486 was enough! nNow 2 books tell me that Fedora Core requires 256M or 512M of RAM - help!!!@!

    To answer your question, it depends on what you want to do. Fedora requires/advices 256mb ram when installing Gnome or KDE.

    It can be done with less, but it will affect speed and smoothness.
    I used Fedora 4 once on a laptop with 128mb together with Gnome, but it wasn't flashy. But for my purpose at the time good enough

    what is 486? is it 486MB RAM or 486 processor?
    if it 486 processor, lightweight distros will run pretty fine. check here ( lightweight distro section ) for more details,
