Newbie to Linux/New Laptop
okay, have new laptop, with Win XP on 100 gig drive - want to "dual boot" to second hard drive, where I would load Linspire - how do I accomplish this?
detailed steps would be most helpful, like which do I do first, such as "boot loader", etc. and on which drive, etc.
basically, when I turn the 'puter on, Win XP will launch as currently from "DRIVE A", and then I want to be able to switch to "DRIVE B" and launch Linspire - how do I do this?

Hi c5vetter,
Welcome to the LinuxForums.
is Second Harddisk internal disk? if not, does your lappy's BIOS support 'boot up from External Harddisk (removable media)' ?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

okk ! check if your lappy supports booting up from External disk. if it doesn't, you have to create /boot partition in Internal Harddisk.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

not sure I understand, but......are you asking if I can boot from a Live CD? reason I ask that way, Linspire distro is on a LiveCD, which I would assume I put in my DVD-R+ drive and then follow directions??????
like I said, not sure - did use LiveCD and just loaded Linspire over top of the W2K OS on my old desktop machine
but, since I have two hard drives, just wasn't sure how to do this on the laptop

you have to check in BIOS of your Laptop for External ( Removable ) media boot up support.
after switching on your laptop, press Esc key or any other key combination that let you to enter in BIOS. check if 'boot from removable media' or something like that option is available in Boot Device section. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Casper,
didn't get a chance to check last nite - when I turned on the 'puter and hit ESC, I got the following three choices:
Boot from CD/DVD Rom
Boot from hard drive
Boot from ZIP drive
it that what you were suggesting I should see?

your lappy doesn't support booting up from External Media.
create a small partitions, around 102MB in Internal Harddisk and assgn it '/boot' mount point during installation. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
