    Photo management software?

    Hi,

I'm looking for a robust photo management program for linux. I have a rather large (and growing) image collection and need so help with it. I'd like something along the lines of Idimager (for windows). Tagging etc are a must and the ability to save that data into IPTC info so that it can port to other software at a later date if I choose to. I also need the ability to import photos from a memory card and (preferably) auto rotate based on the EXIF info. This is basic functionality of free win programs like Faststone image viewer so I'm sure it's available in linux. I've used Picasa extensively on the win platform and I'd rather find another option.

I'd love your opinions on what your favorites are. Thanks in advance!

    I use digiKam.

Admittedly, I haven't yet finished getting rid of duplicates from when I copied over all my backups from disc, so I haven't had a chance to properly use it. But from the little that I've looked at it, it seems to be able to do what you want.

Thanks, Falcifer. I was leaning towards that program myself at this point. I didn't get very far figuring out its capabilities from within the program but in looking over the digikam website, it looks quite promising.

I find F-Spot to be excellent. It automatically detects media and imports from there, has tagging and the usual rotate/redeye tools. There are also added mood tags. The potential downside is that it imports the pictures into its own folder structure based on date - ~/home/Photos/2007/03/31/DSC0001.jpg for example. It's still jpg etc. readable by anyone but it can be a nuisance if you have your photos laid out the way you want.

Aside from that it is very smooth running, simple to use and good looking.

bigtomrodney, thanks for the info. I'll look into F-Spot. Sounds really good. I like to try a couple options out before I commit to one.
