You're probably referring to a LiveCD. This allows you to stick in a CD or DVD, boot your computer from that disc and run Linux without having to install anything or even touch your computer's harddrive. This is useful if you're curious about Linux or want to know if it will work on your computer without the risk of hosing your existing OS.
There are thousands of distributions of Linux, and many of them come with the option for a LiveCD download. Some popular ones off the top of my head are Ubuntu, Mepis, and Mandriva. There are many others, all of which can be found on Distrowatch:

You can get a live version of almost any distro

check your live cd/dvd before you go to install whether it got most of the features you want and whether it supports your hardware well
life is the greatest opportunity that the nature had given you
