how do make an copy of a harddrive that i want to fool around with with linux so i dont ruin it way it is set up, can i use ghost or is there an application i can use

Yes, you can use Norton Ghost, Acronis TrueImage, or partimage (a linux app).
I think there's a ghost4linux app, too.oz

Also have a look at ghost for unix.

i vote for Ghost for Linux but take a look at PartImage too. its very handy in some situations. it creates Bootable Image.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

thanks for the quick reply one question first
my linux drive does not let me access it after the boot screen. so do i make it a second system drive using win xp as first boot drive, then ghost it to another drive, for a total of 3 drives in the system. or do i just use ghost on a cd as boot and clone to another drive.....
