    ATI Radeon 9250 Drivers

Hy there. As a newbie i have have some difficultys installing my Ati Radeon 9250 driver on SUSE 10.1. (need them to activate my 3D desktop - cube - with compiz).
I haved downloaded the latest version of the driver for my Radeon 9250 from www.ati.com --> Drivers & Software --> Linux x86_64 --> Radeon --> Radeon 9250 (driver version 8.28.8), saved it a local temp folder (/home/m00nc0w/temp) and do the followings under 'root':

    # init 3
    # cd /home/m00nc0w/temp
    # sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE101-AMD64
    # rpm -ihv fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm

At this moment an error ocured (failed dependencies) :

    libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit) is needed by fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm
    libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3)(64bit) is needed by fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm
    libdl.so.2(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit) is needed by fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm
    libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit) is needed by fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm
    libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit) is needed by fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm
    librt.so.1(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit) is needed by fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm
    libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2)(64bit) is needed by fglrx64_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.28.8-1.x86_84.rpm

I tryed to install these files with YAST --> Software Management but i could not find them. My PC is a Sempron 3000+, 755-A2, chipset: SIS755&964 with 64 bit support. Please help me with this. Thank you a lot!

Note: Before this I prepared kernel with the following commands (super user mode):

    #cd /usr/src/linux
    #make mrproper
    #make cloneconfig
    #make moduls_prepare
    #make clean

(i didn`t use #rpm -e #(rpm -qa | grep fglrx) command because i just installed linux and i didn`t try before to install any drivers)

    Hey,
Try and have a look for rpm fglrx drivers in Suse repos. If they have that version, you should have no problem with their installation. If not, then go to http://rpm.pbone.net/ and type in all those libs that you are missing.

I succesfully installed my ati driver. 3D acceleration si enabled everything is ok. My only problem now is that i can`t enable my desktop effect. I installed xgl compiz everything needed, and when i start "Desktop Effect" it atention me that my video card is not suported. It`s about incompatibility? (I have an Ati Radeon 9250). If you have any suggestions please post it .... Thanks a lot

Hey! Have you enabled your XGL server? Also, ATi drivers are very problematic with these desktop effects. Have a search on google for running XGL with ATi. I have read that fglrx can run desktop effects under XGL, but personally I have never tried it. Good luck.

I tried doing the same thing... to use Compiz with my ATI Radeon 9200SE card.

To begin with, before even installing Compiz, I couldn't enable 3D acceleration on the card, which was a problem.
I installed Compiz and the ATI Linux drivers, but got the same response as you -- my desktop wouldn't load. Sometimes it crashed before the login, sometimes at the login screen and sometimes after I'd logged in...

In the end, I switched to an old nVidia card I had, which worked fine. There just seems to be problems with ATI drivers. At least with older cards.

Older ATi cards can run 3D effects. Again, read about ATi and XGL extension. I have an nVidia GeForece 4 440 Go 64Mb on my laptop, proprietary drivers installed, and run Beryl fine with that. ATi just writes s**t drivers for Linux. Apparently they will have support for AIGLX etc etc starting with version 9. It's currently 8.35.x so I guess it'll be at least another year!

Radeon 9250 card really works desktop effects - sporadically

I also have the ATI Radeon 9250 card. Strange enough, I first installed SLED 10,
I was able only at the begining to activate Desktop Effects from Gnome. I did not need to type any command in a shell. I could have the cube spinning and the usual things available at that time (around April 2007). But just by logging in KDE desktop, the desktop effects vanished and I could not figure out how to make it back.
Now I decided to try SLED 10 Service Pack1.
And the button to activate Desktop effects is not even enabled!
But for sure, this cgrafics card worked beautifully and nicely in my computer (hey its an AThlon 1.1 GHz!)....just once. All these commands and options that seem different for Gnome or KDE confuse me a lot and even dont know if I should install ATI drivers. Too many questions!!!
