[SOLVED] How do I create Live CD for a distro (WinXP with broken CD burning)
I have WinXP Home Edition on my laptop computer. The specs can be found at http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...m_en/specs.htm
Unfortunately, I can't burn CDs using Windows XP because it is broken. If interested in description of what's wrong, see my post in TomCoyote forum: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.ph...dpost&p=367360
I've downloaded CDBurnerXP Pro http://www.download.com/CDBurnerXP-P....html?tag=more and installed it, and attempted to burn Puppy to a CD, but when I tried to boot off of it, it didn't work.
What software can I use to burn Live Distro CDs, and what explicit steps do I follow to burn the CD?
I am interested in the following distros because my computer is older (~700 Mhz, ~256MB Ram): puppy, vector, DSL, DeLi, ZenLive, dynebolic, feather
Thank you.

check the cd that you burned and make sure that you burned the disc image, not just the .iso file (there should be multiple files on the cd). In addition, try burning at the slowest possible speed. Burning iso files at high speeds gives a lot of room for file errors.

Use the FOSS Infra Recorder for all your burning needs. Just go to Actions -> Burn Image and shazzam!

How?
(I'm starting from Windows, by the way - have mercy on me. It has been a very long time, 1995, since I used any sort of a U*x type of O.S.)

I think I remember seeing a drop-down box for selecting disk speed. Guess I'll walk the dogs while the darn thing is running
What are the sorts of names of the files that should be on the CD when I'm done? Do I open up a cmd.exe (DOS) window and use the dir DOS command to show a list of them?
thank you.

Thanks for the link
I'll check out InfraRecord. Maybe it'll be clearer about the exact steps to create a "disk image" (and not just ISO file) of a Distro.

This is what you want to use to burn your .iso's in Windows. Once you install it you can rt click on your iso and choose ImgBurn to write/burn your iso to disc. Try it. I have used it many times to make LiveCD's and DVD video's.
Oops! here's the link... ImgBurn

My problem was that I thought I needed to create a "boot" CD. So I was trying to use those options. But I think that creates MS Windows types of boot disksThen go to File (in menu) Write disc from ISO file.
Then choose the ISO file you want to burn by clicking on the "..."-button and then click "Write disc" to start burning process.
I tried out InfraRecord, but it didn't seem to recognize my older CD-RW drive (Sony 700 something or other)Use the FOSS Infra Recorder for all your burning needs.
I am using version 3.0.116 of CDBurnerXP, so the instructions are not the same. Here's the steps I followed for this newer version of the program
- Opened CDBurnerXP
- Clicked on 1st option: "Create a new Data-CD/RW, Data-DVD/RW, Video-DVD, or create and/or burn an ISO image."
- Clicked on File menu
- Clicked on "Write Disc from ISO file"
- In the dialog box, clicked on button with ... elipsis label
- Navigated to the .ISO file and clicked on Open button
- Went to "Writing speed" drop down box and selected 2x
- Checked the "Use Buffer Protection" check box
- Clicked on "Write Disc" button
- Waited...
It took 30 minutes at 2x speed to burn ZenLive-4.2.iso, approx 488 MB - Clicked on Done, CD was ejected
ryptyde:Haven't tried it - will give it a go if I have problems with CDBurnerXP Pro.This is what you want to use to burn your .iso's in Windows. Once you install it you can rt click on your iso and choose ImgBurn to write/burn your iso to disc.
Thanks all you guys for the helpful tips.
I have successfully booted DSL and Puppy on my 700MB laptop (256 MB Ram) from CDs. I'll be trying ZenLive next.
If I boot DSL to ram (not sure how to do that yet), then maybe I could "unmount" or "eject" the DSL Live CD, put in a blank CD, and burn another ISO rom DSL?
But wait - I don't know how to write to my harddrive or USB drive in Linux yet. I think I can figure out where FTP/Dillo is again, but if I download another .ISO, where do I put it? After I put it there, how do I burn the CD?
And what's all this about "bit torrents"? I'm sure I'm not the first one to ask these questions. Would there be a FAQ that answers them somewhere?
