Question on Wireless Card
hello,
I have tried Linux before in the past but couldn't get my wireless card in my laptop (Its an Intel ProSet 3945ABG) to work right. So I received an Asus 802.11b/g (its the 107g model). My question is this:
Which Linux distro will recognise my Asus 107g wireless networking card right away? I don't like complicated setups (e.g. ndsiwrapper). There has to be a distro out there that will recognise and connect to my network.
Hope I made sense....

Live CD's will help you out, Your distribution is Mepis which I am currently not using but there are a lot of reviews supporting its good hardware detection which would also lead you to Ubuntu.
PClinuxOS based of Mandriva is another with great hardware detection. POst which one is the best. Or have you tried these already Mepis and PclinuxOS are both excellent

- 04-17-2007 #4This is incorrect. I had to completely reinstall XP Pro because neither my IPW3945ABG or Ralink2500 connection worked 'out of the box' on Ubuntu. Anybody else care to tell me of a distro that works with my network cards?

The IPW3945 does work out-of-the-box in Ubuntu 6.10, an example here:Works perfectly on a fresh Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper) installation.

Also, the Ralink 2500 driver is said to work out-of-the-box as well:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...r/RalinkRT2500
I'm only citing the official Ubuntu documentation though.Since Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) the rt2500 driver is installed out of the box, so your wireless card should be visible as "ra0" if you open the Networking utility found under the System->Administration->Networking menu."To express yourself in freedom, you must die to everything of yesterday. From the 'old', you derive security; from the 'new', you gain the flow."

But between you and me If you don't want complicated don't get into Linux. Linux is everything you want but easy. The better you want it to perform the more work and complicated it is. It is very rewarding and free, but you aren't paying for ease.
It will get easier once you dive in, but it can be overwhelming to start. Hang in there. We will help. Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.
