Do you mean Cygwin?

What exactly doesn't work for you?
Could you give an example. I just installed cygwin in winXP in vmware in Debian and it all seems to work.

PS: You really need to install almost all cygwin packages to get a half working UNIX/Linux -like environment.
For a fully working system, Cygwin simply isn't good enough.

how to install all the packages, frm where i would get those packages.

I think both got it wrong -
The chap asked for some site that executes the scripts online (some shell sort of thing I assume)
Debian is a Linux distribution
VMware is an application that is used both in Windows and Linux to run other Operating systems within the host operating systems.

Run the "setup.exe" again.
It will show you a menu(after asking how to update/install), next just select what you need.
You don't really want everything though, the desktop part(KDE and GNOME) is not needed if you just want to run some unix commands (and other non-graphical applications) in windows.
Also see: http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/setu...internet-setup
That depends on your hardware. While Cygwin uses its own API to run UNIX/Linux programs, VMWare emulates an entire OS. You do need a reasonable fast computer for that.
What exactly do you need it for?
So... you're assuming he's blindly trying to type some commands after opening the Cygwin homepage... (...I do hope you're wrong...).

- 04-26-2007 #8That's what he said so I assumed it was some kind of online "bash-emulator" or that he had mistaken it for one. - Didn't mean any offence to anyone

I guess they're not installed.
Can't you just use "ls" instead of "lc" ?
I'm not sure about lf... (what do you need it for?)
"bc" has a Cygwin package:
http://cygwin.com/packages/bc/
You should be able to install it with setup.exe.
