Hardware Issues
I have 2 Linksys cards, a WPM54G and a WPM54G V2. I had SimplyMepis 6.5 installed and it automatically found the V2 card no problem. I got into the network set up, filled out the network name and the WEP key and I was off and running. Couldn't get my printer running for love nor money(Epson Stylus Photo R260). Installed Ubuntu...didn't find the WPM54G-V2 card and I also couldn't get the printer working. I couldn't get the Avasys driver to install properly.
I tried the WPM54G card not luck with Ubuntu. Reloaded SimplyMepis....couldn't find the card.
I installed an older Mandrake 10.1, didn't find the card and the printer didn't work.
I did get the printer to work with Gutenprint 5.0, but it only uses 4 of the 6 inks.
So, at least SimplyMepis 6.5 and the WPM54G-V2 worked just fine.
I too want to replace Windows as my operating system. I too, am relatively new to Linux. I have tried Mandrake 10.1, SimplyMepis 6.5, and Ubuntu. I just can't get all my hardware to work with these distros.

Now back to the printer.....

I have always been able to get my Epson printers running without trouble but I'll be the first to admit I'm not that hot on printers and have had YaST on SUSE do all of the work. You might have a look at the CUPS configuration page on your PC, it really is quite helpful -

It will show you what is configured and allow you to add printers. Let us know how you get on with that.
