Are you talking about volume on the hardware or software? If you raised the volume on the speakers to the maximum, maybe you should adjust Ubuntu's volume with the icon on the top left (near the shut down button).

So you did both, hmm, maybe you need a better driver, I guess you would get it with Synaptic, but I'm a newbie too, so I can't really help you with that.
