    Exclamation Mplayer Help

(I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this in, so please move if applicable)
So I just installed MPlayer (downloaded, unpacked, compiled then installed). During the config i added --enable -GUI to the ./configure line during the install. Once it was all done and i rebooted, typing 'mplayer' into terminal spits out the list of options and what not, as it is (apparently?) supposed to do. However I can't get it to actually open anything. I'm still kind of confused as to open a file via terminal, but when i go to open a media file on my computer (one that i am able to open with xine) with Mplayer, it quickly opens and closes a box, with an error report I'm guessing.

I'm wondering how to even go about fixing this, i'm kind of lost without the error box to guide me, and i'm 99% sure i installed it, along with the codecs and skins correctly. Alternately, what is the best/safest way to go about uninstalling this or any other program from linux, I haven't crossed that bridge yet --in case i should just uninstall and try again with a fresh install.

I'm running fedora core 6 if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the help/support, I'm starting to get the hang of using this fantastic OS

I would try running from the command line and see if any errors are printed.
    Code:
    mplayer /home/user_name/blah.avi
or you can run gmplayer. This should bring up the gui, but the errors should still be printed on the command line.

I'm not sure, but I suggest you get CNR (if it's avalible for Fedora yet, see my thread in Ubuntu Questions), which I heard makes installing things a LOT easier.

    mplayer-gui

have you installed mplayer-gui? that is the graphical interface to mplayer.
If u installed you may still be facing problems that i faced when i installed

    > yum install mplayer mplayer-gui

    and then used
    >gmplayer
    to call up the mplayer-gui

then i changed some configuration which u may consider. at the left most portion of the gui face there is a button to open up the configuration window. here u may change some pareameters. i choose to enable double buffering, allow software mixing, provided 5120kB buffer etc and ding!!! it started working just fine.

    You may try this way.

    vlc

you may also try vlc player. It's just great.
Install it from the livna repository. Otherwise it might not be able to play some file types.
