If you already have a copy of Windows you can try them both side by side for the price of a blank CD or DVD. It might help you to decide if you know what you want to do with your operating system.
The problem you're going to have with a thread like this is that it has the potential to degenerate into a flame war. Personally I've not had problems with memory usage or management or multithreading/multi tasking on Windows or Linux for years. You're more likely to find your final choice is determined by what you like the best.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

Why choose just one? Many of us dual boot Windows and Linux. It's easy to set up from scratch--just install Windows first and then Linux second. It's a little more involved than a pure Linux install, but barely so.

As stated above, it doesn't have to be an either/or kind of decision. XP and Linux can coexist on the same PC (even the same harddrive) in a dual-boot situation or by using a Linux LiveCD. For more information on Linux in general, see this thread:

We can't tell you whether Linux is right for you, since only you know what you want to accomplish with your operating system. Research will help you determine which, if any, Linux is right for you.Registered Linux user #270181
