    Ubuntu/Dell Inspiron 1501 - no dialup

I'm new to linux and dialup is all I have to the net. There is no cable or DSL in my area. My modem is a Conexant HSX and downloaded the drivers from linmodem. The problam is the gnome-ppp will not install and I don't know what port the modem is on or even if it is config for anything. Dell is planning to offer Ubuntu but there is no support it right now. Thanks for any help you can gave me.

    dialup

    Sorry,

Can't say that I was that impressed with Ubuntu though it has a large hype factor and it has somehow found its way into Dells product line....

Anyway, you can install drivers but that doesn't necessarily mean they are optimized for your particular kernel unless linmodems specifically states they are designed for your particular distro version and the kernel version. If your installation reported success then we have to assume that part is OK.

can't help you with why gnome-ppp is not installing as I use KDE, but generally the drivers should create a symbolic link from dev/ttyS0 to /dev/modem. As a general rule PCI modems require external modules (drivers) whether or not they are software or hardware controller modems.

If you want to almost eliminate any hassle in locating and installing drivers, may I suggest using an external serial port (not USB) modem. The Linux kernel has drivers built in and since many people have moved to DSL, they can be had for under $5 US at your local thrift shop.
Look for Best Data, Actiontec, or Diamond supraexpress. USRobotics are very good modems but waaaay overpriced.

Also, some ISPs are not Linux friendly. They require a "special" authentication script. I have not had good luck with Netzero or AOL but have found a very good Linux friendly provider in Coppernet.

    hope this helps

My laptop has no com ports just USB. I went to Ebay and got a used 3com 56K V90 PCMCIA Modem that can be uses with DOS and Windows. The seller saided he tested it on Mandrake 9.1 without any extra drivers.
