Linux, windows and wine, a better way?

I'm new to Linux, I'm competent in using windows and macs, mainly macs. I need to know what is the best method of using both windows and Linux on the same machine, two hard drives, wine or both? My current machine runs 2.0ghz intel p4 (soon to be 3ghz) 512mb RAM 40gbHDD.

Using dual boot wouldn't the machine always boot through DOS first?

No, upon booting your machine, you'd be presented with a screen that would give you the option of booting into Linux or booting into Windows. Most major distributions will automatically set up a dual boot configuration for you if you install Linux alongside Windows.
