Can't get into my Kubuntu system

    Hi guys,

I am really new to Linux so please talk slowly

I've got a problem since I can't get into my system anymore.
I run Kubuntu and I tried to install XFCE as a desktop environment.
This went well but after a couple of days, now I am stuck at the login screen.

After I type in my username and password, the screen becomes black, and after a couple of seconds I return to the login screen. This is the same if I chose XFCE, KDE or failsafe.

Can anybody help me to get back into my system, or if that isn't possible to make a back-up of my home directory.

    Thank in advance

This is why my Slack box doesn't boot into graphics. So yes I know your problem, no I haven't an easy solution.

If all else fails, you might try the following:
    Boot from lifeCD.
Mount partition with /home/Tomhoofd (Dutch? )
Mount removable media (USB or second hard drive) - or - stick in blank disk
    Back up data
    Reinstall OS

If you have /home on a separate partition, your data will remain untouched...
But make a back up anyway.

Some questions, perhaps a less drastic measure might work.
Can you reach a shell in any way? (or does anyone else know how to do this?)
What exactly did you do to change your settings?
You say it worked for a couple of days, what changes did you make during those days?
