    Which Distro for Old Machine

hi, I have an old system unit that originally runs on windows 3.1 then windows 98. I can't figure out the specs correctly but I think it has a 500Mhz AMD processor, 4G hard disk and 192MB of ram, 32bit video card, it also has a sound card and usb slot card, but i forgot where all the drivers.

can Linux run on it, because I wan't to study Linux, and I'm also open for suggested distribution of Linux for studies.

well, got an old box like i had 1 year ago

mine was Celeron 600 MHZ, 256 MB SDR RAM and 20 GB hard disk, 32 bit video card.

situation.#1 - you are a GNU or UNIX newbie with old hardware.

i always suggested newbies to use GNOME or KDE bu you got an older hardware, with much less RAM

i think your hardware will feel good with Debian Etch netinst CD as Desktops are much heavy and GNOME/KDE will not run on anything less than 256 MB RAM. In the end a newbie should start with Desktops, not Window Mangers but i can not help with hardware. 4 solutions:

1.) (a) install using "Debian Etch netinst CD". this will install basic system .
    (b) then use apt-get to install A Window Manager, Windowmaker is good for a newbie.
    (c) install some other applications you need like a text-editor, Audio Player and video player. use Google for them

    ***

3.) wait .... till some other folks reply.

4.) buy a new box, only if you have money

BTW, you do not need 3rd party audio/video/usb drivers with Linux kernel, except in some cases. 95% of the times drivers are included in the Linux kernel
