Hmmm, you have a massive list of stuff you could use - LaTeX is at home on Linux.
Here are some that my search of "latex editor linux" on Google turned up:
LyX (which is the daddy of them all...)
Kile

Gotta ask, what's so "special" about the paper(s) you have to write which Open Office can't handle? Odds are Open office is already installed on your machine, if you've already installed Linux.
While not formally trained in the law, in civil matters I practice law on my own behalf; i.e., "pro se."
The formatting for briefs to be filed at the state and federal court levels are as I've experienced so far, quite similar (the U.S. Supreme Court is decidedly different; i.e., much more specific as to page layout size and fonts permitted.) On this end Open Office as supplied in the old Mandrake v7.0 and the newer Suse v10.0 can and has handled the work to be presented at all levels. You might note that the MS "98E" and the "XT" varient can not do this. At present, if there is an edition of Linux which does NOT come with Open Office I'm not aware of it.
If it is the case that there is a copy of Open Office already on your computer, now would be as good a time as any to open it up and play around with it. I suggest this as by any reasonable standard, there's quite a bit there.
Hope this helps.
