    Question that "which one" question--

yes, it's that which one question...i'm mainly interested in 3 distros: ubuntu, xubuntu and simplymepis. i've been a windows user and VERY tired of it for all the obvious reasons and need a simple entry to get my feet wet with linux. i've been reading forums and doing google searches at night after work. i do mainly surfing around, general info, yahoo email (getting to be another pain), you tube, band or musician sites (i'm a guitar player), ebay and online vids. but here's the deal; it seems that in my searching around that my machine may just be WRONG for linux. lack of compatibility!
    here it is:
    dell optiplex gx150
    1 gig - 40 gb hdd - 384 ram
    presently with win2k sp4
    ati 16mb rage 128 ultra
    soundblaster live 24 bit
    hl gce8483b cd-rw
    cable isp
    dell 17" crt
i prefer speed over storage. i don't do spreadsheets or super involved documents.
    a little help please!

    Hi and Welcome !

SimplyMepis is a bit heavy but it will work fine on those specs. Xubuntu is lighter than both, Ubuntu and SimplyMepis but it doesn't have codecs pre-installed as in SimplyMepis.
    Try SimplyMepis first.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

thanks--i was down to simplymepis or xubuntu due to it being lighter and possibly faster. i'll go with that.
