    Linux on old P3 laptop

I have an old Toshiba Laptop PIII ,192MB Ram, 10GB HD. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a flavor that will run pretty quick on this old hardware. I will be letting my daughter uses this to surf “nickjr.com” and “webkinz.com” She’s is always trying to steal one of my pc to play the webkinz thing. I had XP on it, but with any Antivirus software running it crawls. She only 6, so I guess I’ll get her started on Linux early. Just need a desktop with a firefox icon. OpenOffice would be a plus she like to type stuff “notes” to us and print them out.

Maybe I’ll get here a new laptop for Christmas. Well then again it will have to be pink, her current wish list is:

    Pink Laptop
    Pink Ipod Nano
    Pink Digital Camera

Why girls do only care if it’s pink?

Maybe look at Ubuntu, or Xubuntu.

Puppylinux should be perfect for that laptop.

And with a few carefully chosen themes, it can even come in pink!

Note:Install icewm themes in the /etc/X11/icewm/themes folder, they should then be picked up automatically by the icewm themes menu.

I just downloaded DreamLinux, Zenwalk, and Ubuntu 7.04 (Will do vanilla server install and then add the Xfce/xubuntu-desktop). I’m going to run them all in a under powered VM sessions and see which I like best. Unbuntu is already a leg up I started with a debian server and loved it. But we’ll see. Well maybe Zenwalk just got a leg up download is at 97% fastest pipe to the house.

Zenwalk is a nice distro. It should probably work fine on that machine.

Ubuntu recommends 256megs of RAM or more. Debian 4.0, OTOH, will run just fine on that machine.

But if the only thing that the computer is used for is web browsing, you really don't need to run a heavyweight desktop environment like GNOME or KDE. A lightweight window manager like IceWM may not have all the features of GNOME/KDE, but it will consume much less RAM.
