I think my main question is, when building a soft RAID1 using mdadm does it always sync raid-device 0 to raid-device 1?

Here are the details of my situation. I built my very first ever soft RAID using webmin (which uses mdadm) but didn't realize just how much data I had! I will need to upgrade the drives in the coming months to increase capacity. How I think this should go is: 1) I should buy two new identical/large drives 2) I should install one of these drives and format than copy the contents of my current RAID1 to this drive 3) Remove the old RAID1 drives and replace them with the new drives setting up the drive with data on it as raid-device 0. It seems to me that this should sync up the devices using the data on the first drive which I just spent several hours copying from the old RAID.

So my questions are: 1) Will this work? 2) Is this the best method to accomplish what I'm trying to do?
